and enjoyable sailing is the result of doing
a lot of little things correctly. We offer
a comprehensive learning experience that will
give beginners and novice sailors the skills
to bareboat charter or to confidently handle
their own boats in coastal waters.
The
following courses provide a good combination
of classroom and on the water instruction.
We emphasize hands-on experience to help you
develop your skills and confidence.
Oriental's School Of Sailing offers two courses
for sailors - Basic Keelboat Certification
and Coastal
Navigation.
BASIC
KEELBOAT CERTIFICATION
US Sailing 101
Prerequisite: None
Target Skill Level:
Skipper or crew of a 24' - 26' sailboat in familiar or protected waters and fine
weather with light to moderate winds and sea conditions without supervision.
Training:
Classroom and on the water: 24 hours over 3-4 days.
Tuition: $595 (Includes Textbook)
Testing and Certification Fee: $50 (optional)
These
essential fundamentals will be the solid foundation
upon which you can build a lifetime of safe
and enjoyable sailing.
The course includes sailing theory and extensive practice; terminology and parts
of the sailboat; sail trim, adjust and shape; points of sail, rudder control
and commands; rigging for sail; docking and undocking under sail and power; basic
seamanship; knots; safety skills including rules of the road, legal issues, federal
equipment; crew coordination, crew overboard prevention and recovery techniques.
Basic
Keelboat also provides an introduction to
sail shaping, the international navigational
buoyage systems, lights and anchoring.
